Today, thanks to thousands of ground receivers and fast internet, anyone can use a flight tracker online from their phone or computer. It is practical when you want to know whether an aircraft has landed, and fascinating too: at any moment you can find out which plane is flying over your head. How does flight tracking work?

The flight tracker can be searched in four ways:

Flight number – the fastest method; you will find it on your ticket or boarding pass.
Airport – type its name or code and the map flies there, so you see everything on the ground, on approach and departing; the arrivals and departures boards are on this site’s airport pages, found via the search in the menu.
Airline – for example all Ryanair, Lufthansa or Delta flights.
Registration – for enthusiasts following one specific aircraft. The Previous tab in the aircraft’s panel shows the flights that same aircraft made in recent days.

When you track a flight, the radar shows the aircraft’s position all the way to its destination, thanks to ADS-B transponders that transmit the aircraft’s GPS position to ground receivers.

Which aircraft can you track live?

The radar mainly shows passenger aircraft, but also cargo planes, private jets and helicopters. Military aircraft that transmit ADS-B are shown and marked as military; aircraft without a transponder are not visible.

Which services offer live flight tracking?

The biggest services are Flightradar24, Radarbox, FlightAware and OpenSky Network. All of them offer free access to a worldwide flight map. Flightradar24 has the most complete database and is the best known; FlightAware stands out with support for many languages. How much does flight tracking cost?

Basic flight tracking is free at all well-known services, and the free version is enough to see an aircraft’s position, route and arrival times. Paid subscriptions are aimed at aviation enthusiasts and unlock extra data such as detailed weather, technical information and flight history. Current prices are listed on each service’s website.

When is flight tracking useful?

The most common situations:

You are picking someone up from the airport and want to know the actual landing time.
A loved one is flying to the other side of the world and you want to check that the journey is going as planned.
The weather is bad and you want to see whether flights are delayed.
A plane passes over your house and you want to know where it came from and where it is going.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the aircraft’s position on the radar?
In Europe and North America the ADS-B receiver network is very dense, so the position is almost always exact. Over oceans and remote areas it is estimated and can deviate from reality.

How do I track a flight without the flight number?
Search for the departure airport and find the flight in the departures list by time and destination, or search for the airline and pick the right route.

Can I see the planes flying over my house?
