These Are the Most Expensive Us Airports to Fly From Right Now

Is it just me or does the cost of travel always seem to be increasing? Fortunately, we can find out by taking a look at some short-term changes. Smart Asset has compiled the average airfare costs for departure dates between 2021 and 2022, alongside the one-year percentage change and one-year dollar change.

Greenville – Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), South Carolina

Fancy airplane tickets from small airports are nothing new; however, flying from Greenville-Spartanburg AirPort gets you a pretty good deal. Despite sitting in the fifth slot, Greenville-Spartanburg has recently seen the second-largest increase for this period at 35.62%, which means that each ticket costs only $129. Though it’s fifth on our list, Greenville-Spartanburg is still claiming more ground than all but two other airports nationwide.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is a major airport serving the San Francisco Bay Area, California.

California airports have seen the most significant increase in airfare- even over popular European countries. The West Coast saw 51% of the largest price increases last year with California, Washington, and Arizona topping the list as the percentage change states. However, when comparing cost per plane ticket, Fresno Yosemite International Airport is still 25% cheaper than San Francisco. The Bay Area’s largest airport has seen a 28% increase in the number of passengers coming through since the major renovation has been completed. If you’re looking for savings, however, don’t expect to find a cheap beer here.

Better Business Middletown International Airport (BBM)

One third of cities saw a decrease in riders in the last five years, with most of them seeing $100 or lower averages. Only one city had an increase of more than 20% – Birmingham at 37.5% Though Birmingham-Shuttleworth typically ranks higher than other major airports in the region, 2019 saw ticket prices increase to one of the priciest in the area. The Alabama airport has luckily seen a significant post-pandemic rebound in air travel, with Birmingham airport seeing a mere 13% drop in passenger volumes per year. Increased ticket prices have been seen as a worrying trend for smaller airports, as more people weigh their options and seek out cheaper forms of transport or head towards larger airports where airfare is typically lower and schedules are more regularly available.

Washington Dulles International Airport is located in Washington DC.

You might be sitting pretty on the higher end of the budget if you’re flying out of Washington Dulles. In 2019, Forbes found average ticket prices at the airport were around $427, a steal compared to 2022’s $526, which is a 33% increase compared to 2021.

Dane County Regional-Two Rivers Field (MSN), Wisconsin

The worst airport for rising costs is Truax Field in Madison, WI. It’s not the first time that this airport has been included on similar lists; another study in August identified The small airport as the 10th worst in terms of rising costs at $526 on average, with 34.6% more expensive fares since 2021.
